about

This is a song written by my Uncle John. He's an incredible musician who was part of a band in the ‘70s called Canadian Zephyr. The song is a metaphor that was inspired by the Oscar Wilde novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

lyrics

THE PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY
By John Howard

It was a night
You could but with a knife
It was the thrill of the chase.
A thief in a silk suit
My love you were such a disgrace.
I wonder why
The things you have done
Haven’t cut any lines in your face.
Maybe Oscar Wilde wasn’t as crazy as they say.

If I crept into your attic
Would I find hidden away
An old masterpiece once as tempting as you
Changing with each passing day.
And though you’re still beautiful, somewhere upstairs
Weeping and withered away,
Must lie the remains of what once was your heart
Like the portrait of Dorian Gray.

Magnificent lies
Could not be disguised
By your finest Parisian cologne.
Didn’t we dance through them all
With such elegant grace.
Your deafening smile
Kept me beguiled
Till I took that walk in the snow
I own these mistakes
But I loved you for heaven’s sake.
